I give up - What's a Blackmouth Cur(BMC)?
There! Now you should be getting the hang of it.
Characteristics
Blackmouth Curs range in color from a dark red to a light, almost white color. They have short hair. One defining characteristic is the mask, or black muzzle and eyes. Sometimes the muzzle does not have nearly as much black on it. This doesn't make the dog any less of a Blackmouth Cur, they just aren't as black around the muzzle. Sometimes they have very little black on the muzzle and they are just black on the roof of their mouth. They normally range in weight from 55-70 lbs., but can be bigger. Our personal experience is that 70 lbs. is a good benchmark. Their body style might be compared to a Lab that is a bit smaller in the body and a bit heavier in the head, with the hound-dog saggy lips and floppy ears.
It's a hunting dog - No it's a pet!
Although the Blackmouth Cur(BMC) was bred to be a working dog(hunting, herding, watch), we have found Molly to be an excellent pet. She is gentle with children and has an unquenchable upbeat personality. She is high-energy and won't let me start my day until we take our morning walk. She LOVES people and never met a stranger. Although we never taught her to hunt, she does it naturally. Several times a day, she trees all of the squirrels that get into the bird feeders.
Smart - Too Smart!
She is extremely intelligent, to the point where we have to spell the words that she knows(like squirrel, which we call s-q-you-know-what). She is easily trainable and quickly picked up the basic commands(sit, stay, come). We have her trained to go to the side of the road and sit down when vehicles approach during our walk.
Old Yeller - the dog, the legend
The dog in the movie, Old Yeller is often said to be a Blackmouth Cur. Our personal research finds this to be untrue, the dog in the movie is a Lab mix. What is true, however is that Old Yeller is ABOUT a Cur dog(there are many different types of Curs), and is portrayed by a Lab. Oh well, that's Hollywood.
